How much do movers cost in the Bay Area?

The short answer

Most Bay Area households ask the same first question: how much do movers cost? For a local move, the honest answer is that you pay by the hour. A two-mover crew runs $110–$150 per hour with a 2-hour minimum, so the smallest possible move costs $220–$300. From there, your total is simply the hourly rate multiplied by the hours the crew actually works, plus any access charges. For long distance, the math changes entirely — you pay by weight at $0.70–$0.95 per pound.

Local hourly pricing explained

Local moves in the Bay Area are billed hourly because no two homes take the same amount of time. The clock covers the crew and the truck together. At B2 Moving, a standard two-mover crew is $110–$150/hr, and the 2-hour minimum means very small jobs — a studio or a single room — still bill for at least two hours.

Three things determine how many hours you'll be charged: how much you own, how easy your buildings are to access, and how packed you are before the crew arrives. A boxed-and-ready apartment loads far faster than one where the crew is still wrapping loose kitchenware at noon.

Cost by home size

These ranges assume standard access and a reasonable amount of packing done in advance. Add stairs, a long walk from the door to the truck, or a full-service pack, and you move toward the top of each range.

What's included in the hourly rate

One reason B2's rate looks a little higher than a bargain operator's is that the number already covers the equipment other companies bill separately. Included at no extra charge:

• Floor runners to protect hardwood and carpet

• Basic liability coverage (released value protection) at 60 cents per pound per item — required by California law

Just as importantly, there is no fuel surcharge and no travel fee within the Bay Area, and nothing is added at delivery without written approval.

Add-on costs that change the total

A handful of conditions add to a local bill. B2 discloses every one of these in writing before your move — there are no surprises at the truck. The common ones:

Access and building factors

• Stairs above the first flight: $40–$80 per flight
• Long carry (over 75 feet from door to truck): $75–$150
• Shuttle service when a 26-foot truck can't reach your street: $150–$350
• Elevator reservation fees — often charged by your building, not the mover

Specialty items

• Piano: $200–$600 depending on type and stairs
• Gun safe or vault: $200–$500
• Pool table: $200–$400
• Fine art or custom crating: priced per piece

Packing labor

Full or partial packing adds $35–$60 per mover per hour on top of the move rate, and at B2 all packing materials are included in that figure. A pack-day for a 2-bedroom apartment typically adds $350–$600. You can cut this by packing books, linens, and other non-fragile items yourself and leaving only the kitchen and breakables to the crew. Local vs. long distance pricing

The single biggest pricing distinction is local versus long distance. Anything staying inside the Bay Area — even a 50-mile move across the region — is billed hourly as a local job. Once a move crosses into a genuine long-distance relocation, pricing switches to weight.

Long-distance rates run $0.70–$0.95 per pound, and weight is the dominant factor. A rough rule is 1,000 pounds per furnished room, so a 1-bedroom apartment at 3,000–4,000 lbs lands around $2,100–$3,800 in linehaul before access fees. How to get a binding Not-to-Exceed estimate

The best way to remove price anxiety is a written cap. There are three kinds of estimates: non-binding (the mover can charge up to 10% more), binding (a fixed price), and Not-to-Exceed — you pay the lower of the estimate or the actual cost. Money-saving tips

You can meaningfully lower your bill without cutting corners on quality:

• Book mid-week and mid-month. Tuesday and Wednesday are the cheapest days; the 10th–20th of the month is the least crowded window. Weekends carry a 10–20% premium.
• Move off-peak. May through September is peak season with rates 15–25% higher. October–April, especially January and February, is cheapest.
• Pack the easy rooms yourself. A hybrid pack cuts packing labor 30–40%.
• Declutter first. Every box you don't move is time you don't pay for locally and weight you don't pay for on a long haul.
• Be ready when the crew arrives. Boxed, labeled, and staged near the door means fewer billable hours.
• Get multiple written estimates. Compare at least three licensed, insured movers and always insist on a Not-to-Exceed cap.
